22nd June - 5th July 2016 Somerset & Dorset Railway Society, travelling exhibition.

Picture

The Children’s Activity Day was a very popular element during the run of a travelling exhibition mounted by the Somerset & Dorset Railway Society to mark the 50th anniversary of the closure of the S&D. The event was co-sponsored by Stalbridge Town Council and the newly re-formed Stalbridge History Society (SHS), and ran at the Hub from 22nd June to 5th July 2016. It was our first big event and attracted large numbers of visitors from Stalbridge and beyond, which gave the new SHS a good launch. The SHS provided a large amount of local railway artefacts from private collections, as well as documents and photographs, some from the new Stalbridge Archive, relating to the history of the line through Stalbridge. Many of the visitors had stories to tell of the place of the S&D in their and their family’s lives, and some donated items to the SHS and to the Archive. A number of the visitors also joined the History Society.
