STALBRIDGE HISTORY SOCIETY APPEAL
Judie & Robert Ralph with the Starburst - I am delighted to tell you that our Stalbridge Sunburst appeal to bring the “Club” polehead display back to Stalbridge has been successful. Amazingly, from the launch of the appeal, it took only three weeks to reach the total, thanks to many donations from SHS members, and from visitors to the History Society stand at the Scout Hut on the night of the Christmas lights switch-on. We have also received generous contributions from Stalbridge businesses and traders, for which we are hugely grateful. And still the donations come in. We hope eventually to have enough money to commission a secure display case to house the piece, with an explanation, so it can be seen by the community and visitors to the town. For more information, or offers of donations for the case, please contact: (Robert Ralph)

Stalbridge & Gloving

Stalbridge History Society has set up a small group to examine the extent and effect of the glove making industry on Stalbridge over many years. Aspects of this work remain in living memory and we would be glad to receive any reminiscences and documents relating to it. In the first instance please contact:

Oral History Project
Oral history is the recording of people’s memories, experiences and opinions. It is:
A living history of everyone’s unique life experiences
An opportunity for those people who have been ‘hidden from history’ to have their voice heard
A rare chance to talk about and record history face-to-face
A source of new insights and perspectives that may challenge our view of the past.
(Oral History Society)
Having attended the Dorset History Centre’s Oral History recording training session in 2019, we are looking for anyone who would like to record their Stories. If anybody knows of anyone who would like to be recorded, we would love to hear from you – we do need you to sign a consent form, so that we can allow people to hear and share the recorded material in the future. We will be storing the transcriptions and a copy of the recording with the Stalbridge Archive.

‘There must be in Stalbridge homes – in writing, photograph or painting, or purely in the memory, many facts about Stalbridge of yesteryear. Tales heard from parents or grandparents – events experienced in youth. To the Stalbridgian by birth these may be common knowledge, of no general interest – to the Stalbridgian by adoption they may prove fascinating reading … We are not asking for long articles – we are asking about snippets of information about events, and personalities, of the past in Stalbridge.’ (Ref: The Ring. Vol.1, No 3. February 1969)
