The New Cottages (Anglesey Cottages) 1831

Listed Building Grade: II
Date first listed: 20-Oct-1983
Anglesey Cottages Nos 1 to 10

Dated 1863 but probably c1840. Rendered stone with ashlar dressings and stone string course. Hipped slate roofs. End stone stacks. Coursed rubble find ranges. Row of 10 semi-detached cottages each of 2 storeys and 5 bays in the 'Tudor' style. Each cottage has stone mullioned 'perpendicular', flat-headed windows with square labels and inwardly opening metal casements throughout. Bays 2 and 4 have square stone door surrounds with 4-centred arches. Numbers 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10 have original doors blocked. Numbers 3, 8, 7 and 6 have later windows inserted into end ranges. Number 7 probably has original door. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 have stone flags set into pavement adjoining front doors.

The thrashing riots of 1830 were instrumental in the building of Anglesey Cottages.  The immediate results of the disturbances in Stalbridge were contained in a set of Minutes from a meeting in Uxbridge House attended by Castleman (Lord Anglesey’s agent) after consultation with the Stalbridge tenants, in which it was agreed

that there should be immediate employment of out of work labourers on different farms at Lord Anglesey’s expense;
that to Tenants in general, 10% allowance would be made on Rents less the sum paid by Lord Anglesey for labour on each farm;

there should be opportunities for getting the Women and Girls at Stalbridge employed by the Glove Manufactory at Milborne Port;

that 8 or 10 cottages should be built at Stalbridge and on other parts of the Estate with ' to 1 acre of land adjoining to allot to Labourers with families at fair rents... and if it succeeded, to build 3 or 4 annually;
that means should be found of procuring some employment for Labourers in making Baskets etc during the long Winter evenings;

that Lord Uxbridge should apply to Lord Melbourne for Arms and Accoutrements for the Horse and Foot Constabulary Force raised at Milborne Port and Stalbridge.
 Minutes from a meeting in Uxbridge House D/ANG EC 1830/3 DRO

The building of the New Cottages (Anglesey Cottages) were started in 1831. The ten new cottages planned for the Labourers must have been the envy of many Stalbridge inhabitants, with their walls of stone, roofs of slate, brick-built porches and privies, iron window frames from Poole,20 and an iron pipe to carry water to the cottages. The fact that nine windows were broken before the cottages were occupied perhaps registered some unpleasant reactions or jealousies or mere vandalism.

It could be construed that Anglesey Cottages were the forerunners of Council Housing in Stalbridge, followed by Westminster Cottages 1864, Westminster Buildings 1864, Council Houses Thornhill Rd. 1927, Council Houses Grosvenor Rd. 1935, Council Houses Barrowhill 1950’s, Council Houses Park Rd. 1950’s, Council Houses Park Grove 1950’s, Council Houses Coppernway 1950, Prefabs Barrowhill 1950’s and Waterlake 1950’s.

When the builders completed Anglesey Cottages they were then sent to Bradford Abbas (part of the Anglesey Estate) to build two pairs of cottages of the same design. Below Bradford Abbas photos taken in 2018.
